Dump: Aozora Bunko row wa books page 1

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 by Agro Rachmatullah

Aozora Bunko is a website that contains copyright-expired Japanese books. Some time ago, I hunted in its main page. For this word dump, the source is from the first page of row wa (わ行) of its book catalogue. I learned lots of book and people names.

There are 46 new kanji:

吾描旧彦徳杉淡淳枝構宝宰孤宗寅幾序寛崎藍裁菫薄論郎霊譚賢篇精漱犯納芥菊織翻与也僚伊之割判俗倫

And 74 new words (including people’s names):

Dump: kanjification

Words that can be kanjified

Again, I changed my kanjification policy. Previously I tried to kanjify all words from top to bottom. Now, I skip those that require kanji outside the Jouyou kanji. This should give me a higher return of investment since I will learn the (supposedly) more common kanji first. I could always come back to those that I skipped later…

I kanjified 17 words on my word list. In the process I learned 14 new kanji:

瓜雑咲涼靴梨棒亀桃酸富竜寸箒

Here are the 17 words:

Dump: random and side effects

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 by Agro Rachmatullah

Random words and kanji are those that I randomly encounter, for example while watching a movie. A notable source for the current dump is guidetojapanese.org. (I read it to learn some grammars but naturally a bunch of kanji stood in the way)

Side-effect words are dictionary words that I picked when learning a new kanji from another dump. For example, I encountered 激しい (hageshii, intense) while hunting from a song. 激 was a new kanji for me, and to know its on-reading I searched for some compounds in the dictionary. Those compounds, e.g. 激化 (gekika, intensification) are considered side-effect words because they are not in the original material.

There are 40 new kanji:

尿喋倚焦訊減寝辛屈寿嘲咸漲愉蘇供覆滑頼濁罵糖徹忙套伏乳握厄授冓蹴快遮籍捨椅儀捻格

And 670 words:

Word dump summary

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 by Agro Rachmatullah

The previous 8 posts (this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this) are worth 2 weeks of study. During that period I learned 173 kanji and 1005 words. Now my kanji count is 1086 and my word count is 5954.

Wow, I passed 1000 kanji. Quite a milestone :). 嬉しい出来事! The view is quite nice here, but I’m probably still halfway to the summit. That is indeed a wonder of the mountain called “literacy”. The higher you climb, the clearer the view below becomes.

Preparing the word dump reports is very tiring… Probably more tiring than learning the kanji itself…

The story continues… I’ve managed to finish the last 47 minutes of act 1! Will probably continue to act 2.

Song dump: Bokura ga Ikiru MY ASIA

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 by Agro Rachmatullah

Bokura ga Ikiru MY ASIA PV

This year Morning Musume turns 10, so Tsunku made a commemorative unit, “Morning Musume Tanjou Juunen Kinentai” (can’t he choose a shorter name?!?). It consists of Abe Natsumi (1st gen), Iida Kaori (1st gen), Goto Maki (3rd gen), Niigaki Risa (5th gen), and Kusumi Koharu (7th gen). Yes, only the odd-numbered generations. It’s very great that Niigaki Risa is chosen, because she usually never gets the spotlight.

The song is a very nice ballad with an Asian theme (both its musical instruments and its lyrics). Definitely a worthy song for a commemorative unit.

I gathered 7 kanji from this song:

讃絆昏轟魅惑励

And 33 words (14 real + 19 side effects). The stats:

  • Previous “average new words/song”: 21.95
  • New words in this song: 14
  • New “average new words/song”: 21.57

Bokura ga Ikiru MY ASIA CD Cover

This is the coupling track of Morning Musume Tanjou Juunen Kinentai’s Bokura ga Ikiru MY ASIA. A song with an enka feel (bleh…), and lots of references to Morning Musume songs.

7 kanji:

唄降浪漫嗚浮呼

And 36 words (8 real + 28 side effects). The stats:

  • Previous “average new words/song”: 22.68
  • New words in this song: 8
  • New “average new words/song”: 21.95

Song dump: Aruiteru; side-effect words

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 by Agro Rachmatullah

Fujimoto Miki in Aruiteru

From Morning Musume’s 31st single. I don’t really like the overuse of “Na na na” and “Sha la la” in this song. It’s as if Tsunku was being lazy. The PV however is very nice, walking at a farm and spending the night at a campsite.

10 new kanji:

若距離贅抱澄貸義聴褒

For this song, there are 15 new words. However, when I learn a kanji I try to learn some of its compounds. Therefore I end up learning extra words not in the song. There are 33 such side-effect words. This totals to 48 words.

As with previous song dumps, here are the stats. Note that the side-effect words are not counted.

  • Previous “average new words/song”: 23.11
  • New words in this song: 15
  • New “average new words/song”: 22.68

About the “side-effect words” stuff, I’ll probably dump them separately in the next dumping period.

Anyway, here are all the words…

Dump: Aozora Bunko

(Continuation of a previous dump)

Aozora Bunko is the Japanese equivalent of Project Gutenberg. It is a digital library of copyright-expired books!

I finally managed to learn all kanji in its front page! やったっ~! My next plan is of course to pick one book and study it through. It should be torturing fun.

29 kanji:
